Polished + Glamour = Satin

I'm hearing and reading that the look for Fall 2008 is polished and sophisticated glamour and satin is the major player. Well, I'm definitely seeing it in boutique windows and catalogues.

With all that satin going on, I knew I wanted some satin in my wardrobe. I came across this pic, the blouse is gorgeousssss! I like the turtleneck detail and decided I need to make my version of a satin turtleneck.

While in Brooklyn last week I stopped at a non-descript fabric shop (I can't recall the name). From the front, one could easily miss it, but of late my eyes are always keenly scanning for fabric stores...lol. The young lady was really nice, but the store really didn't have much that caught my eye until I decided to venture to the back and there laying atop a bunch of fabric bolts was this Abstract satin stretch fabric.

I'm using Pattern B3344, Fitted top with neck variations - Version A: long sleeve mock wrap, B: ruched long sleeve fitted tee, C: long sleeve pullover. D: short sleeve turtleneck w/ back zipper and E: Cowl neck tank.

I'd purchased the pattern at Sav-a-thon, which was having an OOP $1.99 sale, the only problem was most of the patterns were plus size, but it didn't stop me. I plucked up this one, which is sized 18-22, figuring I shouldn't have a problem down sizing it.

I dove straight into this pattern barely looking at the instructions, started off by taking off 5/8" from each side seam, 1/4" from the shoulder seam and it serged up quickly. The pattern calls for a center back zipper and didn't think it was necessary and cut the back on the fold and did a 3-1/2" opening at the center back, serged and fold back edges and final stitched.

I did glance at the instructions for the collar, which calls for gathering at the ends of the collar, but did my own thing and folded it in half on the wrong side, serged the ends, then turned to the rightside and serged the bottom, thereafter baste stitched to the neckline. Pearl buttons for the back closure would be a nice touch

In keeping with the fall season, I cut long sleeves and will work on that this week and finally hem it.

The top looks great! I have been seeing a lot of satin everywhere too, and wanting to try it but am a little intimidated. I do have some in my stash, so I may just have to get it out and play. Thanks for the inspiration!

Thank You! I did manage to baste stitch in one sleeve, but have to redo it, there is too much puckering going on.
