Simply Eclectic or Art Nouveau

ETA:
I came across this fabric at Walmart and couldn't leave it behind, especially for $2.00/yd, the various prints in the fabric is so eye catching. Instead of working on the next item on my sewing list, I decided to work this polyester/lycra fabric up using New Look 6863, thinking it would be an easy project since I'd used the pattern recently. Also the fabric kept calling me...lol

For the most part the dress portion went together easily. The pattern calls for cutting the front and back on the fold, but with the prints I had to do a center back seam to ensure some continuity of the different prints. What I will say is the front/back neckband gave me hell. Once I'd sewn the ends of the neckbands together and attached to the dress neckline the problems began. First, I realized that I wanted the neckbands to be solid and used the solid brown portion from fabric remnant. But the neckband wouldn't lay flat and puckered badly and had to remove it. Then I used 1/4" clear elastic, thinking a gathered neckline would work.... Ummmm Nope... had to rip that out. Finally with no more fashion fabric left for the neckbands, I settled on a stable knit fabric in a deep brown and thank goodness it laid flat and didn't pucker badly.
Now that its completed I'd like to think of this as Art rather than a wearable... What a artistic web I've weaved :]

WOW, that is beautiful. At first I though you had used a new New Look pattern. I was going to say "will you please stop using those cute New Look patterns that I can't find when I go to the store! But, alas it was the same one you used before. I loved your first version as well as this one. I fell in love with the simplicity of the pattern and picked it up this afternoon. I plan on making it soon. Sorry you had that problem with the facings. I had a similar problem with the town gown that I just finished - sew it up and took it out three times before calling it a done deal. Thanks for the inspiration!

Great find on the fabric, I love those type of bargains and even though you where a bit challenged I think it was well worth it the dress is fantastic. I tend to be attracted to chocolates and expresso's probably the latin in me....so I would definitely purchase the dress if I saw it hanging on a rack. Excellent job! Sheila now you just aave to buy some great shoes to go with it.!

OMG that is some cute fabric! You made the perfect dress with that fabric! I tell people sometimes Walmart have some great fabric and you have to get it when you see, because it will be gone.

Shelia did you know that Walmarts are getting rid of there fabric/sewing department and make the electronics departments bigger, they say the profit margin is bigger and they need the display space...which mean things will be getting marked down so keep your eyes open.....! I sure am.

WOW!!! I absolutely love that fabric and what you did with it!!

Glad to hear that you got the yarn and like it. I looked at the picture of it again and it's actually KFI Angora, not Elsebeth Lavold - sorry about the false advertising. Glad you like it though.

Thank You and Thank You again so much for the AWESOME compliments.

The poses, pictures and shoes are courtesy of my daughter. I need to buy a pair of deep brown 2" heels, my daughter's shoes are 4" possibly 5" and I was teetering during the photos...lol

I revisited Walmart in the hopes of finding more of the fabric, in an attempt to have a give away, but no luck. I asked the sales clerk about the fabric and she remembered it and said you must get as much as you need at the time you see it. It was comforting to hear from her that that Walmart fabric dept does very well.

wow, you really made that pattern beautiful with the fabric choice. When I clicked to see the pattern, I had to go back and look at your dress! Isn't it funny how details, like collars can make a break or project? I try to do finishing on a different day and in the morning when I'm fresh and rested.
