McCalls 6240

McCalls 6240:  Pullover dresses with one shoulder & sleeve options, above mid-knee length, dress A has angled hem; dress B has long sleeve; dress C has contrast sleeve and hem band; dresses A, C have elbow length sleeves.

This dress is a quick sew and perfect for a night out on the town.  I did version C using a two-way stretch knit and black contrasting hem band.

The pattern consisted of 3 pieces, front, back & hem band.  The hem band was about 14" in length and the instructions called for folding it in half once cut and sewn to the hem of the dress, which I thought wasn't necessary and would be too thick.  Instead, I cut the hem band half its size.

I cut a size 16 and after baste stitching the dress together tried the dress on and it was too big and too long.  The armscye was huge which would've been ok if I was using the sleeve, but since I opted out of the sleeve, I needed to decrease the armscye.  I removed the baste stitching and pinned the shoulder seam at first 1" from the shoulder seam, but the armscye was still too big, then pinned at 2" and it was a tad bit better, but still showing side boobage.

After pinning out the 2" from the shoulder seam, the armscye circumference measured about 18" and still needed to remove a tad bit more.   Knowing that I couldn't remove any more from the shoulder seam without jeopardizing the neckline and also needing to take out excess from the side seams, I tried the dress on again and pinned out the excess from the side seam and also pinned about 1-1/2" up past the bottom of the armscye. Much better.

Also, the shoulder width was wide, wherein it appears as if the dress has a cut on cap sleeve.  I liked it and proceeded on with serging the dress together.  After the neckline was serged I folded the serged edge to the inside together with 1" clear elastic and deepened the fold, which was necessary since I'd reduced the armscye thereby raising the neckline.

Despite the modifications, the dress was a quick sew and love it, as mentioned before the dress is perfect for a night out on the town.  Would I sew it again... heck yes and thinking the next time around I will remove a smidgen more from the side seams and add a shoulder strap to the other side.

and/or use an O-ring at the shoulder seam.

The dress offers possibilities and definitely warrants a remake.

Did I mention.... I LUV the dress

Have a Great Weekend Everyone.
